DR. HEIDI WISE, OD, FCOVD - SPEAKER
Dr. Heidi Wise graduated from Troy State University in 1994 with a Bachelor’s degree in Math and Chemistry. She then attended Southern College of Optometry, graduating in 1998. Her post-graduate training includes 300+ hours in the areas of vision development, vision and learning/performance, vision rehabilitation, and neuroscience. In 2011, she completed a Fellowship in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD).
Dr. Wise has over 20 years of experience in diagnosing and treating functional vision problems through vision therapy, behavioral optometry, and neuro-optometry. These areas focus on helping patients of all ages improve their visual skills to maximize efficiency and performance at school, work, playing sports, and living life. Dr. Wise helped coordinate the first on-site vision rehabilitation program at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. There, she directed vision rehabilitation programs for patients suffering from acquired brain injuries, including strokes, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries.
Dr. Wise has spent the last 15 years working with physical therapists and dentists to develop novel and highly effective ways to use vision to manage human movement dysfunction. This visionary science, called Physical Functional Medicine, takes a global perspective on the autonomic nervous system to actively retrain the brain’s behavior as expressed through the body including posture, movement, and nervous system function. This type of integrative program yields an effective way to manage headaches, dizziness/disorientation, brain fog, poor reading/concentration ability, chronic pain, and proper growth and development. She particularly enjoyed her experiences with MLB athletics, as it combined her love of baseball with her passion for teaching others.
Joining with an expanding group of clinicians after moving to Georgia in 2019, Dr. Wise founded AIA Vision®, a branch of the Applied Integration Academy®. The team of providers that collaborate with Dr. Wise in patient care is actively growing, and currently includes physical therapists, dentists, and myofunctional therapists. The clinical hub for this activity is in the office of Alice Lam, DDS, in Houston, Texas, where Dr. Lam, Dr. Wise, Mike Cantrell, MPT, and James Anderson, MPT, regularly see patients together and seek to expand clinical approaches to enhance patient outcomes. As Founders of AIA, their mission is to continue growing in knowledge through collaboration with others with the patients they serve at the center of their focus. Their motto is to “Simplify the Complex®,” so that this approach can serve patients across the globe, improving lives through others.
